With over 18 years in the I.T. industry I have had personal
experiences with working on equipment in server cabinets and have seen
completely unmanageable setups, a badly setup server cabinet could affect
Safety, Performance, Manageability and Serviceability.
Safety
UPS’S
We would calculate the total load from all the devices in you
cabinet and recommend a UPS unit to suit
Power IN
On small cabinet builds where there’s not much load, then a 13
amp mains socket feeding the UPS would suffice, although we would recommend this
to be isolated on its own mains circuit, on larger cabinets with greater load we
recommend an isolated 15amp socket for each individual cabinet
Cabinet Stability
Server cabinets can kill people if not setup correctly, an
incorrectly setup cabinet with middle to upper weight distribution and without a
heavy duty front plinth can easily topple over if a server was to be racked out
for maintenance, it’s not rocket science
its careful management and common sense,
Earth
With the
ups earthed to the cabinet all of the internal mains cabling will be protected
by this, should a live cable touch any of the metal parts then the ups will
instantly shut off, At Microhal
we recommend only one power source into the
cabinet for each UPS installed and all internal device’s to be fed from the UPS,
Performance
Termination and cable management can affect performance of
your network, our engineers are very careful when it comes to routing the cable
and termination, especially when using the much thicker Cat6 cable with
frequencies running up to 200Mhz, any kinking, crushing or
elongation of the cable has a proportional effect on impedance and a consequent
knock-on effect on transmission performance
Manageability
We can design
the layout to suit your needs and the environment you are in, we would recommend
to have access to at least the front and back of the cabinet preferably all four
sides if you have the space,
Serviceability
For rack mount servers all
cabling would be distributed through a cable tray so you can rack out the server
with confidence that you are not going to either pull out a cable from the
server or snag another cable from another server
SERVER CABINET TIDY UP SERVICE
After having a server cabinet for a few years you may find
that as devices have been added on over time the cabinet can become unmanageable
and a complete rewire of the cabinet is required
Maybe you have outgrown your server cabinet and you
either need a larger cabinet or an additional one
